Tawang, the land of Monpas and the birthplace of HH the 6th Dalai Lama is one of the most beautiful tourist destinations in India. Located at a height of around 10000 ft above sea level, Tawang shares its border with Tibet in the north and Bhutan in the southwest, and Sela range in the east. The nearest airport and railway station which are well connected with other parts of the country is at Guwahati.
“Ta” means horse and “wang” means chosen/blessed, The site of the Tawang monastery was chosen by the horse of Merag Lama Lodre Gyatso, according to legend, Merag Lama was unable to decide a location to establish the monastery, so he set for meditation inside a cave when he finished with his meditation and came out his horse was missing, on searching he found his horse grazing on a hilltop, he considered this as a sign of divine blessing and finalized that location for construction for the monastery and that’s how Tawang got its name.
Tawang is blessed with natural scenic beauty and has its historical importance too, Tawang is one of the fast-growing tourist destinations in India for its scenic beauty. The Buddhist circuit and its historical importance attract a lot number of foreign tourists too.
Detailed Itineray
- Day 01 : Guwahat– Bhalukpong;– Meet and greet on arrival at Airport and Drive to Bhalukpong, Overnight at Bhalukpong.
- Day 02 : Bhalukpong–Dirang;– Morning drive to Dirang (165 km 7hrs). Lunch at Bomdila and After lunch vist to Bazaar gonpa n upper gonpa, later drive to Dirang. Overnight at Hotel, Dirang.
- Day 03 : Dirang– Bangachang; After breakfast visit Dirang Dzong, Dirang Dzong was the administrative building of Tibetan government during Tibet’s rule in the region till early 1950. After wards drive to Bangachang, over night at camp. Bangachang is one of the most important pilgrimage site in the region, this pilgrimage site is related to Guru Padmashambawa, who traveled to Mon through Tibet and have blessed this place. Legend believe that this site is important for the those without kids, it’s said that if you visit this pilgrimage site and pray with pure heart, you will be blessed. Overnight Camp.
- Day 04: After breakfast our guide will take you for the tour of the surroundings for a detail explanation of the pilgrimage site. After lunch drive to Tawang, over night Tawang.
- Day 05: Tawang, Full day explore Tawang Monastery, founded by Mera Lama Lodre Gyaltso during 17th century A.D. a contemporary of the fifth Dalai Lama. Later trek to gyangong Ani Gomap, which are the adobe of nuns. Gyangong ani gompa was also constructed by Merag Lama for his sister. It is situated in the lap of a far off mountain laced with natural scenery. This Ani Gompa is under the administration of Tawang Monastery. And on way back to town visit Bramdung chung anni gonpa, This Ani Gonpa is the oldest nunnery of the region .
Evening visit Urgelling Monastery, situated 5km to the south of Tawang Township. It was here in 1683 Tsangyang Gyatso, HH the sixth Dalai Lama was born. Overnight Tawang. - Day 06 : Drive to Zimathang, witness the region’s largest and the oldest stuppa built in 12 century by Lama Prador, it’s one of the similar stuppas that stand in Nepal, later proceed to Taksang monastery, during Guru Rinpoches travel to mon region, he spent 3 nights meditating in a cave of the rocky mountain, spend some time at the lovely Sangatsar lake and later proceed towards Tawang, Over night Tawang.
- Day 07: Hiking Day, hike to Khromtin Gonpa and thongmin Gonpa, evening drive back to Tawang.
- Day 08: Visit Phomang, Phomang is also related to Guru Rinpoche, The small monastery and the rock under which Guru Rinpoche meditated are worth visiting, this site is also believed to be the most sacred site to depose the mortal remains. On the way back visit Bikhar Gonpa, The monastery of the dead god, this two are equally important to the peoples of Tawang, its believed that once in a life time one has to visit this monasteries for prayers. Overnight Tawang.
- Day 09:Tawang – Bomdila;– After breakfast, drive to Khinmai Gonpa, Khinmai Gonpa is the only Nyingma Monastery in the region, the head of the monastery is Thiksai Rinpoche, later proceed to Bomdila, enroute check out breath taking view of waterfall at Jang and Jashwant Garh Indo Chinese War Memorial. Overnight Bomdila.
- Day 10 : Drive to Bhalukpong, rest of the day at leisure.
- Day 11: Bhalukpong – Guwahati;– After breakfast drive to Guwahati airport for further journey, tour ends.
